We have reviewed Rising Antivirus software before and have been increasingly impressed by the companies offerings. The latest development is Rising PC Doctor which works as a sort of Anti-Malware toolkit. It offers Trojan protection, download protection, USB immunization, and much more. In fact, the program also includes features not found in the company’s actual antivirus programs like vulnerability protection and LSP fixing capability. Finally, the program is actively supported a contains definitions released today.
The installation of Rising PC Doctor was simple. The program was only was only 8 megabytes in size. Some download sites report that the program only works on Windows computers up till Vista. However, I had no problem installing the program on Windows 7. However, the Rising PC Doctor is not supported by 64 bit versions so I had to install the program on a 32 bit edition.
The first thing one will notice is how vast and feature rich Rising PC Doctor is. First the program includes two full Trojan and Spyware scanners. The program actually found malware traces on the test computer, the W32.Looked.EH which included rundl123.exe and logo_1.exe. This is pretty amazing considering that the program isn’t a full blown free antivirus program. The engines also work in real time to detect threats immediately as they are encountered. Process usage is also reasonable at 5 megabytes for the real time shield and the scanner uses about 20% CPU power with no increase in the process size.
The feature that I liked was the vulnerability scanner. The scanner found 7 weaknesses including out of date OS updates, allow anonymous visitors was enabled, and Windows displays the name of previous user logged in. Next, Rising PC Doctor offers a full privacy sweeper that can clean obscure histories such as the windows icon history and prefetch files among many other things.
Rising PC Doctor breaks up protection into two different aspects. Local protections include auto immunization of USB drive threats from even mp3 players (detected new USB flash drives perfectly) while the internet protections protection offer custom url blocking, IE protection against code overflow, and finally a download scanner / blocker. One will be hard pressed to find this in a standard free antivirus.
Rising PC Doctor also offers expert tools. They include system repairers, start up control, process manager, apps connected to the internet via their port, service manager, lsp fixer, and a file shedder. For the novice user there is the one click system fixer. It removes Trojans, spyware, and auto repairs the system in just one click.
Overall, I am really impressed with Rising PC Doctor as it offers so much functionality for free. However, sometimes the interface can be a little slow but this does not make it unusable.
